American orthodontist Dwight Damon is the creator of this system. In his practice he has used it for more than 15 years, now it is called "revolutionary" and is widely used around the world.
What is the secret of Damon bracket system?
The secret is in its mechanism. This is passive self-ligation.
But firstly, let’s speak about active ligation.
In all other bracket systems the archwires are tightly fixed to the brackets by ligatures or other devices. We call this ligation (from the word "ligature")
In the Damon system the archwire is not tied to the brackets, because the braces are closed with lids, and keep the archwire by themselves, and the archwire is ligated by them:
The archwire is free to slide in the groove of bracket, as far as it is not connected. This allows the use of archwire of weak force, because it does not need to overcome the force of the binding ligature. The archwire is almost passive. This is a passive self-ligation.

What does the passive self-ligation give?
Teeth moving is physiological as well as their own muscles participate in this process. The archwire is needed to stimulate the process of moving and for the final installation of teeth in the ideal position.
Currently, there are several varieties of self-ligating braces, but they are active, the covers in these brackets tightly fix the archwire.
Brace system designed by Dr. Damon is the unique passive self-ligating system, and his philosophy of treatment is called "revolutionary" because it gives great advantages for the patient and the doctor.
What are the benefits of Damon system?
1. Bracket - system allows to treat without the extraction of "bad" teeth, in terms of the traditional method, in cases with a large deficit of space in children as well as in adults. This allows us to improve facial proportions and the aesthetics of the smile.

Before treatment:

After treatment:
2. There is no age limit (12 years and older). In adult patients the duration of treatment is the same as in adolescents.

3. Reduction of time needed for treatment to 25-50% depending on the individual characteristics of the organism (the average duration of treatment is 14-18 months).
4. Reduction of discomfort and pain for the patient during the treatment in connection with the use of the weak force.
5. Reduction of number of visits (average 7-10 visits are required for all treatment) and longer intervals between visits (visit an orthodontist once every 8-10 weeks).
6. Excellent esthetic result.

Before treatment:

18 months past (11 visits)
7. Improving periodontal condition.
8. The restructuring of the bone tissue provides a stable result of treatment.
9. Due to the absence of ligatures it is easy to take care about the hygiene of the oral cavity during the treatment, which reduces the risk of caries (elastic ligatures adsorb the plaque and bacteria on the surface).

After treatment:
Does Damon system have any disadvantages?
Braces are placed on the front surface of the teeth and therefore are visible when smiling. Is this a disadvantage? If yes, then it is the only one.
