Just about ortodontics

What is orthodontics and who is an orthodontist?
Orthodontics – is a branch of dentistry that deals with prevention, diagnosis and treatment of dento-maxillary abnormalities using a variety of devices.
Orthodontist – is a dentist who specializes in the treatment of false placed teeth and  pathology of bite and facial profile.

Why do I need to align my teeth?
Crooked teeth cleaned badly. There is  caries in the area of crowded teeth, inflamed gums. Teeth contact incorrectly one another and this can lead to pathological bite or joint. Crooked teeth disturb the aesthetics of your face and smile. Your charming smile is one of the most important elements of your face and appearance. Therefore, the alignment of teeth can have a positive impact on your appearance.

How can I know whether my children are in need of orthodontic treatment?
Very often it is difficult to determine. For this, we recommend to bring your children from the age of 5-6 years, when baby teeth start falling out, for consultation of orthodontist. The doctor will give you advice or begin treatment, if it is necessary for your child.

What are the first symptoms of orthodontic problems that I should pay attention?
You can ask your child to open his mouth and look  if he had straight teeth, if they don’t diverge in different directions, whether the upper teeth contact with the bottom, if there are no gaps between his teeth. Does your child have bad habits (thumb-sucking, nail biting, etc.)? Does he close his lips, when  closes his mouth? If his upper lip is strongly protruding? Do you like his profile? How does the baby sleeps - with open or closed mouth? Does he snore during sleeping?
If you find something of the above can turn immediately to the orthodontist.

At what age do we need to show children's to orthodontist?
According to international standards - with 6-7 years.

Can teeth be corrected themselves in 8-9 years?
Sometimes this happens when there is enough space for the teeth while the jaws are growing. But it is better to consult a specialist and decide on their own.

Is it true that there is self-regulation of  the bite with age?
Usually the opposite happens - pathology bite increases with age. It is recommended to treat pathology in the early stages of pathology and not to emerge with age. Timely orthodontic treatment gives good results.

Can I go to the orthodontistif I’m adult?
Yes, you can. At present 30-40% of patients - are adults. You can successfully carry out orthodontic treatment in adults.
Some problems, such as underdevelopment of the jaws, or conversely the massive jaw of adults are in need of surgical correction - this is determined by a specialist.

Which may lead to crowding of teeth?
Bad habits (thumb-sucking, biting tongue), destruction of primary teeth due to tooth decay, trauma or lack of growth of  jaws, sometimes very large teeth.

How many people are in need of orthodontic treatment?
Need for treatment is high, almost 70% of patients are in need of orthodontic treatment, but some of them do not go for many reasons.

And what when I'm with my crooked teeth?
Very often, crooked teeth can create problems in the joints due to improper contact between the teeth. This is a pain in the joints, clicking while  opening and closing  mouth, discomfort in the joints in the morning.
The second problem - this is the aesthetics of your smile. If you want to have an attractive smile, you need to think about your  teeth. This is the style of your life.

And what will be at the first visit?
There will be initial consultation,  asking questions, examining your teeth, considering treatment options,  analyzing whether treatment is needed or not.

Is orthodontic treatment expensive?
The cost of treatment depends on the pathology, on the apparatuss to be used by a patient during treatment and on the duration of treatment. This should be discussed individually during the consultation.

Will I feel discomfort when wearing apparatuss?
All you have to - it's the patience the first few days, when you install the device. Then - you just have to get used to it.

How do these apparatuses look?
There are different models:

metal braces gold braces ceramic braces

lingual braces functional unit front arc

front arc facial mask

How long will it last?
The average treatment lasts 1.5 years, but may need less or more time depending on the pathology.

Is it possible to avoid the development of orthodontic pathology?
Sometimes at early age we use a so-called preventive orthodontic treatment - small devices installed in children mouth in order to avoid the development of pathology at a later date.

How to start orthodontic treatment?
First you should arrival to the orthodontist for a consultation, where the doctor make examination and reprints of your teeth for diagnostic models. You also need two X-ray image: ortopanthomogramma  and cephalogramma for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning. We need to take a picture of your teeth and profile to monitor treatment progress and treatment outcomes.

Why should I remove my teeth?
In many cases, before orthodontic treatment, some teeth are removed in order to fit the remaining teeth in the dental arch. When there is crowding of the teeth and there is not enough space for all the teeth it is recommended to remove teeth in order to achieve good results. When facial profile is convex, then it requires removal of teeth. Thus, we can slightly improve the facial profile. In some cases, without removing the results are not stable, and teeth go back  after the treatment.

But I was told that  teeth go back after treatment?
Teeth always have a tendency to come back after treatment. To avoid this it is necessary to find the right treatment and, if necessary, remove the teeth during treatment. In this case, you must agree with the orthodontist. Second:
after completion of treatment retention devices must be worn or fixed  on your teeth from the inside surface for long periods of time (the time will determine the orthodontist).

How do retainers look like?

There are: removable retainers - they must wear at home and at night

removable retainers - fixed with the inner surface of the teeth, they do not interfere, just need to brush your teeth.

Do I need to go to the orthodontist after removal of the apparatuss?
Sure, once in 5-6 months for the control of retainers. If there is any problem with the retainers you should immediately turn to an orthodontist to correct the problem

What problems can be after fixing  braces?
2-3 days of toothache - it's natural reaction of the teeth on the strength (effect of braces), then the pain goes away, until the end of treatment the patient feels no discomfort. Apparatus  rub mucosa a little in the early days, but it shouldn’t be cause for concern. If the arc prick or cut, then you need to come to visit a doctor.

How often should I attend the clinic with the device?
The usual routine follow-up visit is hold 1 time a month in all other cases, if necessary, you can come to an unplanned visit to the doctor.

Are there restrictions when wearing braces?
There are some recommendations:
1) don’t  nibble solid food roughly
2) brush your teeth with special tools (you will be shown at consultation)
3) and typically do not open bottles with your teeth

Can I play sports with braces?
You can, but when doing some sports you need to wear so-called "mouth guard" - like in boxing for protection from injury. And, in general, additional devices are not necessary.

Can I play a musical instrument?
Yes, you can. The devices do not interfere.

What if the braces come off?
Orthodontist will paste it back or replace it with another.

What happens if a child swallows a bracket?
It's okay. Bracket is made of metal, not affecting the body. Don’t worry.

Can the apparatus be reused?
All units are unique and belong to only one patient, they can not be used twice.

What problems occur most often?

crowded teeth

protrusion of upper teeth

over bite

abocclusion

cross bite

spaces between teeth

mesial  occlusion

What determines the success of treatment?
Success depends on many factors:
• the type and degree of pathology;
• the correct method of treatment;
• a qualified orthodontist;
• collaboration of patient and his parents with an orthodontist (must comply with any instructions the doctor).

Can the opinions of the doctors  divergent?
Sometimes it happens. It concerns the choice of treatment and  devices, but it should not affect the outcome.

Is it always possible to achieve good results?
If we start treatment at an early age, the results should be satisfactory.
When there is skeletal pathology and the treatment is drawn, the results may not be 100% - we call it "camouflage treatment" or "compromise treatment."

What is camouflage or compromise medical treatment?
When a patient needs a surgical correction of the bite, and he refuses the proposed treatment. In  such cases, you can fix your teeth to achieve satisfactory results, but the skeletal form is not altered.

Should I start orthodontic treatment?
It is at the request of the patient. Depending on what interests the patient. Each individual case must be discussed with the orthodontist.
